5.1 Call for Submissions

Public Knowledge Journal, Volume 5, Issue 1: Resilience

Public Knowledge Journal is now accepting graduate student work for its next issue.

Hurricanes. Global pandemics. Economic collapse. Political violence. Today’s world is fraught with impending crises. Thus, it is hardly surprising that the phenomenon of resilience, or the capacity to bounce back from trauma, is receiving strong scholarly attention across a variety of disciplines, including biology, health, ecology, engineering, physics, psychology, sociology, and urban studies. Although the term takes on unique meanings in various fields, resilience may be loosely defined as the capacity of an individual, community, or system to recover from, and even prosper, after a disturbance or trauma.

For its fifth anniversary issue, Public Knowledge Journal welcomes contributions from graduate student scholars that address the topic of resilience in its myriad forms. Submissions that critically engage with and creatively examine this topic are encouraged.

Suggested themes include, but are not limited to:

  • Resilience of the body, mind, and/or spirit
  • Resilience of a culture, religion, or society
  • Resilience of a nation or people
  • Resilience of materials and/or resources
  • Resilience of systems or structures (e.g., ecosystems, economic systems)

Questions that might be addressed include:

  • What common features does resilience exhibit across disciplinary boundaries?
  • How can resilience be achieved by reconnecting to inner strengths?
  • How might resilience be reconceptualized?
  • What enables an organization to sustain the impact of interruption?
  • How are ecosystems able to return to a steady state after a disturbance?
