Author Guidelines
Public Knowledge is an interdisciplinary online periodical that thoughtfully considers topics related to contemporary public affairs. It is an open access, biyearly, peer-reviewed journal.
As this is a student journal, we welcome submissions from a wide community of students who have interests in a variety of topics that are relevant to the public. Please read the following material and review our style sheet before submitting a manuscript for publication consideration.
General Guidelines to Submitting Peer-Reviewed Manuscripts
- Scholarly manuscripts submitted to Public Knowledge will be double-blind reviewed by at least two referees. The editors will make the final decision on publication. Please remove all self-identifying information from your manuscript, including footnotes that might identify you.
- Attach a cover page separate from the main text that includes full names of authors, affiliations, addresses, telephone, and email addresses. In the case of multiple authors, one author should be identified as the Corresponding Author.
- Articles should be as concise as possible while still including a sustained analysis based on evidence and careful arguments. Our experience shows that shorter length articles are more conducive to online reading and response. Authors should use clear, direct language and avoid jargon. The preferred reference style is APA format (with some modification due to the online nature of the journal).
- We encourage authors to expand and illuminate key concepts by linking to supplementary files (e.g., graphic images, tables, exhibits, audio clips, video clips, and embedded flash files) from the article proper. Such materials take full advantage of the Web's multimedia capacities in order to allow screen length to remain brief and ";bottom-line.";
- Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: cover page; title page with abstract and keywords; main text; appendices; references; tables with captions; figures with captions.
General Formatting Information
- Do not use ";styles"; - instead use the simple formatting ";bold"; or ";italic";.
- Please use Arial 12-point font for the Title, which should be in bold ";title"; (upper and lower) case.
- Use Arial 10-point font for the remainder of your article.
- First level headings should be in bold upper case, and second level headings in bold upper and lower case.
- No footnotes please - use endnotes instead. Although deviating from APA style, endnotes work better for formatting online articles.
- Photographs, maps, diagrams and other audio-visual aids are encouraged. Please include these in the text where and as they should appear. Please provide images in gif or jpeg formats. At the point of publication, each illustration must be submitted as a separate file and should be the highest quality possible. Authors are responsible for securing copyright permissions prior to publication. Note: The editors invite authors to submit images for possible publication on the journal cover.

Abstracts
Please provide an abstract of approximately 100 words. The abstract should be included with the rest of your article in the submission file, but it should also be copied into the appropriate text box during the on-line submission process.
Style
Submitted manuscripts must be written in the APA style, brief details of which are included below:
References should relate only to material cited within the manuscript and be listed in alphabetical order, including the author's name, year of publication, complete title of the cited work, title of the source, volume, issue, and pages cited. For examples, see OWL at Purdue (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/) or APA Style (http://apastyle.org/).
Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
- The submission has not been previously published (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The written submission file is in Rich Text Format (RTF), equivalent Open Source document file format, or HTML format.
- All URL addresses are activated and ready to click (e.g., http://pkj.org) in the text or reference list.
- The text is single-spaced; uses Arial, 10-point font; uses italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); uses simple formatting - not ";styles"; and has the figures and tables placed within the text, rather than at the end.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
- If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
- A cover page with author information is provided but not incorporated into the manuscript.
- A 100 word abstract has been prepared and included in the manuscript as well as placed separately in the appropriate text box at the time of upload of metadata.
- I have followed the Public Knowledge Author's Guidelines and understand that my article will not be accepted in any other format.
